The scientific visualization of 3D vector fields is a powerful aid in
performing computational-fluid-dynamics simulations of turbulence.
Implemented as part of an open-source
visual-data-analysis environment, Pablo Mininni and co-workers at the
National Center for Atmospheric Research, Colorado, US, have developed
a visualization technique to
simulate the formation of structures within hydrodynamic and
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. In this case, the left-hand image
shows the current intensity and magnetic
field lines within a simulation of MHD turbulence. The integrated
velocity field lines are show on the right (P Mininni et al. 2008 New J. Phys. 10 125007).
